About us

We draw on diverse understandings of the nature of mental distress, to inform more creative, inclusive, person-led responses.

Background and philosophy

inside out emerged from its founders’ extensive experience in the mental health sector as consultants, facilitators, educators, advocates and leaders, and their intentional use of lived experience to inform and transform responses to mental distress.

inside out is informed by principles of critical dialogue, genuine partnership, lived experience leadership, and social and epistemic justice. These principles form the basis of all our activities, projects and consultancies, which aim to bring together those interested in mental wellbeing, social change and equality to explore and develop better ways of understanding and responding to mental distress experiences as individuals, families, communities and service systems.

inside out operates based on a deep respect for lived experience knowledge, recognising this is a crucial key to understanding and responding to the fully human experience of mental distress. We draw on diverse perspectives and believe that being open to different ways of making sense of these experiences leads to more creative, inclusive, and hopeful responses.
